| Built in 1874, the original red-brick church was attended by Jefferson Davis. The bell tower, built in 1891, houses the Window of Hope which remmbers the survivors of Hurricane Camille. The bent flagpole is in honor of those who died and the destruction caused by Hurricane Camille. Be sure to read the Biloxi Indian legend explaining the origination of the Ring in the Oak. | ||

| During the Civil War, the island's fort became a prison for Confederate P.O.W.'s, and a base for the U.S. Second Regiment (Louisiana Native Guards), one of the first African American combat units to fight in the Civil War.
